IP cameras in general are widely categorised as CCTV cameras for the simple reason that CCTV is the commonly known description for video security camera surveillance.

The fact is they couldn't be more different! CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television and uses analogue cameras on a closed wired circuit connected to a separate recorder with images viewable with a monitor.

IP Cameras on the other hand stands for Internet Protocol

Cameras which as the title suggests are digital cameras which are able to stream live video externally over the internet! They have their own built in web servers eliminating the need for a computer or other separate control unit to function. Their biggest advantage over standard analogue cameras besides their superior video image quality is that video streams from them can be viewed directly in real time remotely on smartphones and tablets from as far away as the other side of the world.
